Getting Inspired

Wednesday, April 3rd, 2019

Amy and Mark just returned from vacation and are gearing up for the busy season here in Maine. The end of March is usually the time they get away and come back ready to tackle last minute projects and start to get the patio and gardens ready for the season. We hope the weather cooperates with their plans and timeline....

Cold Weather Comfort

Friday, January 5th, 2018

Hello from snowy Bath, Maine! We survived the bomb cyclone (or the blizzard as we usually say here in Maine) and have dug out and are now preparing for another deep freeze. It seems like we went from a warm wonderful fall to the deep freeze of winter – no gradual temperature drop this year. And it isn’t just Maine experiencing the frigid temperatures but a good portion of the country....

Christmas at the Packard House

Tuesday, December 5th, 2017

The Christmas holiday is a special time at the Benjamin F. Packard House. Amy and Mark have the house fully decorated by the first weekend in December just in time for guests arriving for an early holiday getaway. Each of the common rooms downstairs has a least one tree and all the rooms have a theme....

Slowing It Down

Tuesday, November 21st, 2017

Whew! Summer and Fall flew by and now we are slowing things down here at the B&B. Most people think more time to relax but that is not always the case. We are open year round and still have guests coming and going but not like the hectic busy season months. I am still greeting and picking up on my training of Picco, my new brother and our Greeter in Training. He has a ways to go but is friendly and loves meeting all the guests. If he has one fault he is too excited! But I will continue to work with him in the off season and make sure he knows the rules of being a good innkeeping dog....

Sorry – We Don’t Allow Pets

Wednesday, June 14th, 2017

We get a lot of request from prospective guests asking to be allowed to bring their furry family members when they come to visit and they are disappointed when we tell them we are not “pet friendly”. That is a bit of a misnomer though – we love pets obviously. Here I am blogging and Picco, our newest furry family member, is set to arrive next week. The issue arises when pets are in the guest rooms. It is not an issue of dogs being on their best behavior but an allergy issue. I am not allowed in any of the guest bedrooms and only allowed in certain areas of the house. Picco will be following these same rules when he arrives. Amy and Mark started this rule as soon as they moved here so that guests who have allergies to pets can still come and enjoy our B&B. Many of these people with allergies are pet lovers but just cannot be around them. With only 4 rooms it is not feasible to a designate “pet friendly” a room or two. So as much as I would love to have a temporary playmate, guests are going to have to be happy with a surrogate dog to give them all that furry love....

Past and Future

Monday, May 15th, 2017

I have been thinking a lot about the past. My buddy, Lupi, would have celebrated his 14th birthday on Saturday. It was a sunny day and I spent it in the garden thinking about how much he loved laying in the sunshine. Guests still ask about him on a regular basis so it makes me happy that his spirit and reputation continue on....

Anticipating Spring

Tuesday, March 28th, 2017

What a difference a year makes. Last year we were already cleaning up the gardens and the mulch was spread in early April. Today, as I stare out the doors to the patio, I still see snow on the garden, ice on the bricks and the thermometer is registering 35! Oh how I long for spring! This Mud Season, as we Mainers call it, can be a long and bleak time of year but as I look out I am also seeing some signs of brighter times. The snowdrops are blooming under the birch tree (Amy will be disappointed if I step on them again this year) and a couple daffodils are sprouting near the driveway where the...
